Courses in music, drama,
and mass media are offered as subjects for theoretical and practical
study for first year students in all the Schools of the University,
except for the School of Medicine.. Each student may choose
one of the following elective courses:
Music
The course in music began in 1986 as a student music society
that offered evening courses in music to interested students.
In 1989, well-organized coral music activities were offered during
the day. The result was the formation of the Ahfad Coral Music
Group. From 1992 onward, Music has been offered as an elective
course for first year students.
URTD101 Music (3 credit hours)
Objective: To expand the students' theoretical knowledge of music
and to enhance their musical talents. Content: The history of
music and world musicians. The scientific rules of western music,
the musical scale and units, practical training in keyboard instruments
and in singing. Students must submit a research paper on a musical
topic.
Drama
A drama society was established in 1993 and is joined by 35 students.
The shows of this society are presented at all university occasions.
Drama is taught as an optional course for first year students.
A training course in the methodology of communication is held
yearly for interested academic university staff.
URTD101 Drama (3 credit hours)
Objective: To develop the students dramatic talents and to broaden
their imaginary and realistic views. Content: Child theatre at
the School of Psychology, educational theatre at the School of
Rural Extension Education and Development.
Mass Media
Mass media covers radio, TV broad casting service and journalism.
First-year students may choose a course in one of these areas.
Groups of 10 students are required to edit and publish a small
magazine as partial fulfillment of the practical course. The university
magazine of Al Nisf Al Waied is prepared and edited by students
enrolled in this course.
URTD101 Mass-Media (3 credit hours)
Objective: This course develops the objective skills of students
in this field. Also it enhances their writing, creativity and
observing skills. Content: Art of publishing and editing newspapers
and magazines, essay writing, conducting interviews, general knowledge
on news agencies, world broadcasting stations, art of publicity
and information.
