Ahfad Family Health Centre
Introduction
Ahfad Family Health Centre was formally established in 1994 in
collaboration with the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA). The
Centre promotes the health of the local community by providing quality
comprehensive services (curative, preventive and promotive) to a
defined population in the context of PHC strategies. Health education
is provided at all levels based on the health status of the population.
The Centre also provides health care to Ahfad University students
and employees. In addition, the Centre operates as a teaching center
for medical students and postgraduate residents, providing a learning
experience in a community-oriented primary care setting.
Objectives
The Centre is established to address the following:
- To reduce high infant mortality and maternal
mortality.
- To promote family planning services of eradication
of traditional harmful practise through an integrated program
of MCH/ FP services.
- To achieve the national goals of integrating
mother and child health, family planning, eradication of harmful
traditional practice in educational curricula of Ahfad University
for Women.
- To achieve community changes in attitudes and
gender relations that would have a positive impact on women’s
health.
- SRaising the standard of health for all
members of the community at reproductive age.
Location
The Centre is housed in its own premises located
on the University Campus, with in walking distance of the other University
buildings.

aids, which are used in its training and research activities.
In addition to its own facilities,
the Centre as part of the University of Ahfad draws on the full
range of the university services of resources.
Structure
With a professional body of full and part-time staff,
the Centre has introduced its services through different sections
of units, which include

- Computer and Medical Records Unit

Current Programme
The Centre aims to create links between the University and the
Community to achieve the national goals of health promotion to women
and children by implementing the following:
- Sensitizing 1500 Ahfad students to carry out
20 campaigns combating Harmful Traditional Practice (HTP) in 11
states of Sudan.
- Community Education through workshops, symposiums
and other interventions is one of the Centre activities.
- Conduct a research on women health and family
planning in general and FGM in particular.
- Women Empowerment through income generating
activity project in Umbada area.
- Raising awareness about population problems
at national level through training.
Publications and Video Production
Preparation, production and dissemination of popular materials
on women and reproductive health issues both for in house support
to Ahfad Health Centre ongoing programs and to support the work
of grassroots organizations and voluntary initiatives in the country,
the one of MCH/ FP/ EHTP, Centre activities.
- Publication of one reader manual about reproductive
health
- Publication of pamphlets, posters and booklets
on women and reproductive health issues
